Stormy Friday
To say we had a rough start this morning would probably be an understatement! As the children were walking into class the tornado sirens sounded and we had to quickly line up and get to the library. The kids were understandably put on edge by the sirens and having to quickly take cover. Thankfully it was just a mistake and there were no tornadoes. After recovering from our intense morning, the kids came back and we jumped right back into our daily routine. All week we have been learning about our Daily 5 language arts/reading period. This is a period of 90 minutes (75 on Friday) that consists of 5 Common Core aligned centers that your child will be taking part of 4 days a week. Your child may be assigned to a reading group led by Mrs. Paul or myself. They will only be with Mrs. Paul for their reading group and then coming back to my room for centers. After the kiddos get use to Daily 5, I will post pictures that will help paint a picture for you of what Daily 5 looks like. In a nutshell it is a lot of writing, reading, and word work. I will be spending my weekend planning and organizing fun activities for each of the centers, I can't wait! Before I sign off with a few pictures of our Candyland behavior management board and classroom posters on how to pick a "just right" book, I just had a few things I wanted to ask all of you. In second grade we strive to make your student more in charge and responsible for their learning. Through out the week, any work your student does not finish goes into their "unfinished" folder. It is their responsibility whenever they have free time to finish the work in their "unfinished" folder. If by Friday afternoon they still have unfinished work, I plan to send it home to be completed over the weekend. However, I'm not sure how I feel about sending homework home over the weekend. I would prefer not to have to send it home over the weekend but the only other option would be to have students stay in for recess. Given that homework for your student often takes up some of your time as well, what would you all prefer? Sending unfinished work home on Fridays or have your student use recess time to finish? Your input is greatly appreciated! Just comment below or send me an email :) Ok, here are some pics as promised!
